DONE DEAL: Potential Crisis Avoided as Charlton Athletic announced the signing prolific star on a short term deal

Charlton Athletic have taken quick steps to address their goalkeeping dilemma, signing Sam Walker on a short-term contract.

With Harry Isted out with a knee injury, the League One club made a move for Walker, 32. The shot-stopper has struggled to find a home since joining Reading in the summer of 2018, and he is presently without a club after being released by Kilmarnock prior to the start of this season.

Important Protection

Ashley Maynard-Brewer is the Addicks’ first choice, but with Isted out, they needed a steady backup. Walker will take care of it. With nearly 360 appearances in all competitions for a variety of clubs, he is grateful for the opportunity.
Walker, according to the South London Press, felt this was the right fit at this moment. “I’m overjoyed. This feels fantastic because I’ve been keeping myself sharp and ready for the proper opportunity. I spoke with Stephen Henderson [Charlton goalkeeping coach], and they obviously need some cover and someone to come in while Harry is out.

“I feel ready to contribute to the squad, which is obviously doing very well right now.” I already know a number of the men, so I’ve blended in nicely. “I’m excited to contribute to the team.”

Walker has played for AFC Wimbledon, Barnet, Northampton Town, Yeovil Town, Bristol Rovers, and Colchester United during his career, which began in the Chelsea junior ranks. Reading signed him in early 2014 after seeing him play for Colchester United.

Andy Scott, the Addicks’ technical director, was overjoyed with the news. “Sam is a very experienced goalkeeper who will compete for the first team shirt while Harry recovers from his injury.”

“He has played a lot of first-team football at all levels and has demonstrated maturity and quality in the time he has spent with us and gives us excellent cover in the goalkeeping department.”

The Author’s Opinion

Charlton has had a mixed start to the season, and as injuries begin to pile up at this time of year, it is critical to maintain strong cover in key areas. Sam Walker is a valuable asset who, when called upon, will be able to stand up and establish his worth. If the current number-one choice’s form deteriorates, this arrangement could become even more lucrative for the journeyman goalie.
