PERFECT SOTO REPLACEMENT: Yankees GM Brain Cashman Reveals Yankees Are Very Close to Completing a Deal For $200 Million All-Star Infielder To Replace Juan Soto

The New York Yankees lost a heavyweight free agent contest for slugger Juan Soto, but the money saved will be used to acquire talent across the roster.

Following numerous significant signings over the last several days, New York is now in the running for third baseman Alex Bregman, who was most recently with the Houston Astros and is widely regarded as the best position player still available on the free agent market.

On Thursday, December 19, Jeff Passan of ESPN detailed the contract that the 30-year-old Bregman is expected to sign, as well as how he could fit in with a handful of major market clubs that still have cash to burn as the calendar approaches the new year.

Why Yankees' Brian Cashman is 'glad' despite failing to make Kyle Tucker trade

“Bregman’s salary might be in the $200 million area as well. [His market] remains robust since a handful of teams still have significant funds to spend,” Passan wrote. “The Toronto Blue Jays need a third baseman. The same goes for the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees may shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. from third to second base, and the [New York] Mets could do the same with Mark Vientos moving to first.”

Bregman has won two All-Star games (2018, 2019) and two World Series championships (2017, 2022) during his nine-year MLB career. Last season, the infielder was also awarded the Gold Glove.

His career batting average is.272, with an on-base percentage of.366 and a slugging percentage of.483, according to Baseball Reference.

The Boston Red Sox may have the inside track on signing Alex Bregman.

That may be a difficult pill for Yankees fans to swallow after Soto crossed town to join the Mets on a historic contract just over a week ago.

New York used to be able to sign just about any free player it wanted, but this offseason, at least, several of the Yankees’ biggest competitors have broken the bank to pry away top stars who are plainly on the team’s radar.

However, the Yankees have not been quiet in free agency. In free agency, the organization signed All-Star starting pitcher Max Fried to an eight-year, $218 million contract and traded with the Chicago Cubs for 2019 National League MVP Cody Bellinger.
