SD PADRES: John Seidler, Eldest Brother of Peter, to Assume Control Of The Padres

Eric Kutsenda, a longtime friend and business colleague, has been in charge of the Padres since the untimely death of club owner Peter Seidler in November 2023. The Padres will be led by a different man in 2025, but his last name is recognizable.

Peter’s older brother, John Seidler, will assume ownership of the franchise. John, a 65-year-old who joined the ownership group in 2012, will attempt to realize Peter’s dream of winning a World Series in San Diego.

We lost our chairman, Peter Seidler, a little more than a year ago. The Padres released a statement saying, “He would be immensely proud of the team’s perseverance and performance this past season, but he would be most thankful to the Padres fans whose devotion and support inspired them.”

“Eric Kutsenda has been our temporary control person since Peter’s death. As trustee of Peter’s trust, Matt, Peter’s younger brother, is happy to announce that, subject to Major League Baseball’s approval, Peter’s older sibling, John Seidler, a successful businessman and entrepreneur, will take over as the Padres’ next manager.

“The Padres were never considered “his” team by Peter. Rather, he viewed the team as a resource of the community he was a devoted custodian of. John will keep fostering this fantastic team, its players, supporters, staff, and the entire San Diego community because he shares Peter’s goal.

Mike Shildt on the tough loss to the Cardinals

The Padres went from being a small market afterthought to a team that regularly contends for postseason spots and top free agents under Peter Seidler. They enjoyed one of the best seasons in franchise history in 2024 and cut salary by about $100 million.

In the process, the Friars set a single-season Petco Park attendance record, swept the Wild Card series against the Braves, drove the Dodgers to the verge of elimination in the National League Division Series, and won 93 games.
