Because head coach Brent Pry had not yet appointed a new defensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Virginia Tech supporters were in a frenzy. The Hokies formally named Matt Moore as the new offensive line coach on Monday, so you can cross that off your to-do list.
Moore, a native of Georgia, started 34 games as a collegiate football player for Valdosta State in the early 1990s. Shortly thereafter, he started coaching at the high school level.
Moore landed a job at Hoover High School in Alabama, a national powerhouse, after two years as a coach at Pickens High in Jasper, Georgia. Moore served as Hoover’s offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, helping the team win three consecutive state titles.
In 2006, he took his first college position at Troy, where he remained for one season before transferring to Texas Tech, where he served as offensive line coach for five seasons. After spending the 2012 season at Middle Tennessee State, he spent two years as the offensive line coach and assistant head coach at Louisiana Tech.
Before joining Neal Brown at West Virginia in 2019, Moore went back to Troy in 2015 to work as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach.
For the Mountaineers, Moore coached a number of All-Big 12 players, and Zach Frazier, his former centre, is starting as a rookie for the Pittsburgh Steelers this season. The Hokies once wanted offensive tackle Wyatt Milum, who is anticipated to be selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft.
This is a significant improvement over Ron Crook and a huge hire for Pry. Moore is a well-known teacher, has alternatives, and is a solid recruiter in the recruiting footprint. With Xavier Chaplin (Auburn) and Braelin Moore (LSU) transferring, and Kaden Moore graduating after several years, he will have his hands full.
