This is due to the fact that Hill, who has been perhaps the NFL’s most exciting wide receiver in the past ten years, started adding fuel to the fire as soon as he spoke.
“I’m leaving. I’m too competitive to just be out there, so even though it was fantastic to play here, I have to do what’s best for my career in the end,” Hill told reporters.
The Washington Commanders, who would pair him with a dynamic young quarterback in Jayden Daniels and another star wide receiver in Terry McLaurin, are among the teams that are reportedly interested in acquiring the six-time NFL All-Pro, even though Hill still has an incredible $54.6 million left on his current contract over the next two seasons. Zach Bachar of Bleacher Report believes that the Washington Commanders may be among these teams.
“After exceeding expectations with a rookie starting under centre in 2024, the Washington Commanders make sense as a potential destination for Hill,” Bachar said. “… One of the NFL’s most formidable tandems would be McLaurin and Hill, who would both make opposing secondaries consider their speed while allowing Daniels more leeway to rush when necessary.
Examining Hill’s Ten Years of NFL Domination
Since being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs in the fifth round (No. 165 overall) of the 2016 NFL draft out of NCAA Division II West Alabama, Hill has been one of the most explosive players in the league.
In the 2023 season, Hill led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns on 119 receptions, narrowly missing the NFL receiving triple crown. Hill started his career with eight consecutive Pro Bowl trips and was named an NFL All-Pro six times.
He has also been successful. In addition to missing the Pro Bowl for the first time, 2024 marked Hill’s first season playing for a club that did not make the playoffs. Hill was a key member of the Chiefs’ journey to the Super Bowl after the 2019 season.
According to all accounts, Hill’s 2024 season was the poorest of his professional career. He saw his performance nearly reduced in half with 81 receptions for 959 yards and 6 touchdowns in 17 games, ending his run of four straight seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards.
Figuring Out How Much a Hill Could Cost Commanders
Since the Commanders have a projected $99 million in salary cap space available in 2025, when Hill is due $28.6 million, he would make a solid fit financially.
The Commanders would actually suffer harm if they were to acquire Hill, and we have a rough notion of how much that may cost in a transaction.
In March 2022, the Dolphins signed Hill to a four-year, $120 million contract extension in return for the Chiefs’ 2022 first-, second-, and fourth-round picks, as well as their 2023 fourth- and sixth-round picks.
