With good reason, the New York Mets are the front-runners to sign slugger Pete Alonso this winter through free agency. However, this isn’t a one-horse race, according to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. It’s actually a race with eight horses. “There currently are eight teams showing at least some interest in Alonso, including the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox,” said Nightengale. “However, Alonso is still in the game of first base musical chairs, in which eleven teams each have a new first baseman. He might be forced to sign a short-term contract with an opt-out to rejoin the Mets.
The Seattle Mariners aren’t the kind of team the Mets could easily outbid in a bidding war. The Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox are two teams that Mets supporters should be wary of. These clubs might spend a significant amount of money to acquire Alonso if they so desire. In the unlikely event that Alonso leaves, New York must be careful to have a contingency plan. Though it isn’t official until he signs a deal, the Mets are the front-runners to sign him.
San Diego Padres first baseman Luis Arráez is a guy who is entirely different from Alonso and could be the player that New York chooses. According to reports, the Padres are shopping for Arráez in preparation for the 2025 campaign. Although he isn’t a particularly good runner or defender, the Mets would gain from starting him in front of Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor because of how good his hitting is. Although the left-handed hitter would not hit as many home runs as Alonso, he would be less expensive and would almost certainly hit.320.
