In exchange for two top prospects, MLB expert Rucker Haringey of FanSided suggested that the Yankees acquire Brendan Donovan from the St. Louis Cardinals.
The Yankees get:
The Cardinals’ Brendan Donovan purchases:
Everson Perreira
Warren, Will
The suggested agreement is intriguing and beneficial to both parties. While St. Louis receives two elite prospects to aid in its rebuild, New York would strengthen its infield.
Donovan has three more years of team control remaining while he is in arbitration. In 2022, the infielder took home the Gold Glove. During his time with the Cardinals in 2024, Donovan hit.278 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs. With him anticipated as New York’s second baseman, Jazz Chisholm Jr. would remain at third base.
The Yankees would trade Perreira and Warren, two excellent prospects, in exchange. Perreira is an outfielder and the tenth-ranked prospect in New York. He is expected to make it to the majors this season after hitting.265 with 10 home runs and 27 RBIs in Triple-A last season.
Warren would play a significant role in the Cardinals’ comeback. Although he is blocked by the Yankees, the right-hander, who is ranked sixth among New York’s prospects, may try to earn a seat in the rotation this season. Warren made 23 starts in Triple-A last season and finished 6-5 with a 5.91 ERA.
Proposal for Yankees-Cardinals Trade Made by Analyst
Since both teams meet certain needs, the proposed deal appears to make sense on paper.
St. Louis gives up some payroll for two top prospects to aid in their rebuild, while the Yankees acquire their second baseman.
Haringey stated, “Everson Pereira could be the deal’s star.” He was once a top-five prospect, but injuries have somewhat hampered his career. His tools are still fairly loud, and while there isn’t room for him in the New York outfield right now, he might make an impression on the Cardinals’ big-league roster the following season.
“The second player in the deal going to the Cardinals would be Will Warren,” Haringey continued. Although he adds depth to New York’s starting lineup, he is a bit unnecessary in the Bronx given the team’s offseason signing of Max Fried. In a separate Stroman transaction with another team, the Yankees could theoretically go back and replace him on the depth chart.
Warren, according to the analyst, would be a Cardinals middle-of-the-rotation arm. Even though Donovan still has three years of control left, Haringey believes it would be a good return.
“The Cardinals would receive two top-10 prospects from the Yankees in this trade, but they could like to see more upside in a possible Donovan move. For a reliable regular who appears to be out of the team’s budget range and not yet on its competitive timeframe, that’s a fantastic return,” Haringey said.
Donovan’s long-term deal didn’t appeal to St. Louis.
The Cardinals and Donovan were unable to agree on a contract, thus they traded arbitration figures.
John Denton, a Cardinals reporter for MLB.com, claims that the team was not interested in signing Donovan to a long-term contract.
A source told MLB.com that Brendan Donovan and the #STLCards were unable to come to a contract agreement before today’s deadline. An arbitration hearing between the parties may be scheduled for late January. According to a source, the Cards were not interested in signing Donovan to a multi-year contract, which was shocking, Denton wrote on X.
St. Louis selected Donovan in the seventh round of the 2018 Major League Baseball draft.
