The Ohio State Buckeyes are seeking for their future quarterback. Head coach Ryan Day’s coaching staff has extended a huge offer to one of the best five-star quarterbacks in the 2026 college football recruiting class. With Will Howard entering the NFL draft, the Buckeyes are set to hold a quarterback competition in 2025.
Former Alabama Crimson Tide signal-caller Julian Sayin is the early favourite to be Ohio State’s starting quarterback, but there will be competition. The Buckeyes also signed five-star quarterback Tavien St. Clair, who may battle with Sayin to replace Howard. Day has already set his sights on the future, as Ohio State just offered five-star quarterback Ryder Lyons from the 2026 class.
This past high school season, the star quarterback received the Gatorade California Football Player of the Year award. Lyons, a Folsom, Calif. native, announced the Buckeyes’ offer in a Friday message on X.
According to On3.com, USC is the favourite to land Lyons, as the Buckeyes attempt to build momentum on Trojans coach Lincoln Riley. “The Buckeyes are one of six finalists in the recruitment of Nashville Christian five-star Jared Curtis, the No. 1 QB in the 2026 cycle, per the On3 Industry Ranking,” Hunter Shelton, an analyst at On3.com, wrote on Friday. “While the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine continues to favour in-state USC, Lyons is also considering other institutions. This month, Trojans head coach Lincoln Riley, Michigan coach Sherrone Moore, and Oregon coach Dan Lanning all paid visits to Lyons. So far, Arizona and North Carolina have announced plans for 2025.
