Everyone knows the Raiders need a quarterback, but they’re not easy to find. Carroll has a defensive background and may want to simply establish a defensive juggernaut.
The easiest method to accomplish this is to have an excellent defensive line. The Raiders are close to it with Maxx Crosby and Christian Wilkins, both of whom are Pro Bowl players. However, the group’s performance could improve further. According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, one NFL general manager believes the Raiders would be an excellent fit for Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.
“The Raiders should consider trading for Myles Garrett to pair him up with Maxx Crosby,” the general manager told Russini.
This comes just after Garrett demanded a trade from the Browns. He was the team’s top pick in 2017 and has been chosen to six All-Pro teams. The Browns are coming off a 3-14 season and have a dreadful quarterback situation, so it’s difficult to see how they’ll rebound quickly.
How much will Myles Garrett cost?
Garrett is one of the NFL’s most well-known players, but his future is uncertain. He is only 29 years old and won Defensive Player of the Year last season. In 2024, he recorded 14.0 sacks and was chosen First-Team All-Pro for the second time.
He’s still one of the top defensive players in the world, so the Browns should get a lot back in return. Garrett’s major fear is that he is approaching 30, which is when defensive players typically begin to fade.
Cleveland is unlikely to consider the two first-round picks the Raiders received in exchange for Khalil Mack last year. According to Russini, one general manager believes the Browns can acquire one first-round pick and a second, or even a first-round pick and two third-round picks in exchange for a player.
Should the Raiders give up the No. 6 pick for Garrett?
If the Raiders are interested in Garrett, they have something valuable to offer. They own the sixth pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. That is far more valuable than a first-round choice later in the round.
Would the No. 6 pick be sufficient to secure Garrett outright? It might be, but do the Raiders want to give up so much? They have more immediate needs at quarterback, offensive line, and cornerback. That being said, Garrett and Maxx Crosby would be the best defensive ends in the NFL.
If the Raiders do not have a path to a great quarterback, their best bet may be to make it impossible for opposition quarterbacks to compete. Given Carroll’s defensive background, it’s not the most original notion.
