Over the last decade, the Los Angeles Dodgers have frequently allowed talented players to leave. With their talent, it’s interesting to think about the players who have left in the past. However, the Dodgers should not be too disappointed with their decisions.
They now have the best team in baseball by a long shot, and they have the money to replace anyone who quits. J.D. Martinez was among the players who left.
Martinez only played for Los Angeles for one season, but he was named to the All-Star team for the sixth time in his career. He hit 33 home runs, drove in 103, and had a 136 OPS+. He is now 37 years old and is projected to play again in 2025, and if there is one thing he has proven during his career, it is that he will be ready to swing.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball anticipated that he would join the San Diego Padres on a one-year, $5 million contract. “If Martinez wants to extend his career and play for a contender, perhaps there is a spot for him in the Padres’ lineup. San Diego is definitely tight on cash, and they need to address a hole at DH. Perhaps Martinez accepts a reduction based on his previous earnings to play with the Padres,” Finkelstein wrote.
The Padres are attempting to reduce salary. While they haven’t had much luck with it, there is still time to shift a few players. Martinez would be a fascinating acquisition if he still has anything in the tank.
