The New York Mets made a big splash this summer when they signed outfielder Juan Soto to a record-breaking $765 million contract. But who will guard him in the lineup? Resigning first baseman Pete Alonso seemed to be the most reasonable solution. Could David Stearns, president of baseball operations, target Chicago White Sox slugger Luis Robert Jr. in a trade?
The Mets’ centre field situation remains uncertain heading into 2025. Tyrone Taylor and Harrison Bader received the most of the playing time last season. New York’s lone significant addition to this part of the roster was Jose Siri, who was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite his lengthy injury history, Robert Jr. has significant upside at the position.
Since making his big-league debut in 2020, he has only played more than 100 games in a single season. But that one year was exceptional; Robert slugged 38 home runs, 36 doubles, 80 RBI, and 90 runs scored, earning his first Silver Slugger Award. What would it take for the Mets to sign Chicago’s right-handed slugger? FanSided’s Jacob Mountz suggested the following hypothetical trade:
Mets acquire outfielder Luis Robert Jr. The White Sox acquire infielder/outfielder Jeff McNeil, shortstop Jett Williams, outfielder Drew Gilbert, and right-handed pitcher Nolan McLean. Aside from McNeil, Chicago would receive three of New York’s top ten prospects in this trade. Given his contract position, Robert would provide the Mets with a lot of upside and flexibility. He is entering the final season of a six-year, $50 million contract. His contract does, however, offer club options worth $20 million per year in 2026 and 2027.
