The San Diego Padres have made a massive splash in free agency, agreeing to a stunning $250 million deal with veteran outfielder Jason Heyward, sources confirmed Saturday. The deal, spanning five years, is one of the most significant contracts awarded this offseason.
Heyward, 34, brings a wealth of experience and leadership to a Padres roster aiming to contend in the National League. Coming off a productive season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he hit .269 with 15 home runs and 45 RBIs, Heyward has proven he can still be a valuable asset both at the plate and in the outfield.
The Padres, who have been aggressive in reshaping their roster after missing the playoffs last season, view Heyward as a key piece in their push for a deep postseason run. With the departures of key players in recent years, San Diego needed a veteran presence to stabilize the lineup and provide defensive reliability in the outfield.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jason Heyward to the Padres,” said Padres president of baseball operations A.J. Preller. “His championship experience, leadership, and consistency on both sides of the ball make him an ideal fit for our team as we continue to build a winning culture in San Diego.”
Heyward’s contract is among the biggest free-agent deals given to an outfielder this offseason. The 2016 World Series champion is best known for his elite defense, winning five Gold Gloves throughout his career. While he has not always been a power hitter, his ability to get on base and contribute in key moments has made him a respected presence in clubhouses throughout his career.
The Padres, who finished 82-80 last season, are hoping this signing helps close the gap between them and the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. With a mix of young talent and veteran leadership, San Diego is signaling its commitment to competing at the highest level.
Heyward is expected to join the team for spring training in Peoria, Arizona, as the Padres prepare for the 2025 season.
