The Green Bay Packers must tackle many personnel questions this offseason. Indeed, several upgrades are required at several spots before they can be considered legitimate Super Bowl candidates. And, while most of these are on defence, the key offensive need will be the focus of the offseason until it is addressed.
Obviously, this relates to the wide receiver position. Christian Watson will miss most, if not all, of the 2025 NFL season after injuring his ACL in Week 18. Even if he was healthy, the Packers’ wide receivers struggled in 2024, prompting many to name the position as one of general manager Brian Gutekunst’s key objectives this offseason.
Even Green Bay Packers Running Back Josh Jacobs wants the team to add a veteran wide receiver.
In the days leading up to Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans last week, Packers running back Josh Jacobs made many guest appearances on various shows and podcasts. He has indicated several times that he believes Green Bay needs a veteran wide receiver to supplement the players they currently have at the position.
To be fair, he also stated that he enjoys the wide outs they presently have, but that “we need a guy that’s proven to be a number one wide receiver already.”
While none of Green Bay’s current wide receivers had a particularly awful season, Jayden Reed’s drop rate was 12.0%, Romeo Doubs’ was 9.7%, and Dontayvion Wicks’ was 11.8%.
Watson was their most consistent pass catcher in terms of not dropping passes, with a drop percentage of only 3.8%. And will be out for much of next season.
The Green Bay Packers could target Chicago Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen in free agency.
While most Packers fans want Tee Higgins and Davante Adams to come to Green Bay as Jordan Love’s top receiving threats, Maurice Moton of Bleacher Report believes Chicago Bears wide receiver Keenan Allen, a six-time Pro Bowler with the Los Angeles Chargers, could also be a good option.
“Allen isn’t a receiver with great speed to stretch defences vertically, but his inside-outside mobility might cover a gap in the passing game.
“Due to Allen’s age, the Packers would most likely not have to pay a big premium to sign him. They can add a ready playmaker at a reasonable cost. A dependable veteran wideout could be what Love requires to complete more drives in the red zone.”
Whether Green Bay is interested in signing a 33-year-old wide receiver is debatable. However, if they opt to target Allen, he makes sense in terms of price and contract length.
His current market value is only two years and $11.1 million per year, which the Packers could easily accommodate under their salary cap.
Allen has 70 receptions for 744 yards and seven touchdowns last season for a poor Bears squad. If he doesn’t lose much ground this season, he could be even more productive in a superior offence.
