The New York Mets have big ambitions for the 2025 season, but according to a top MLB expert, they won’t get there unless they make a bold move for White Sox ace Dylan Cease. With a revamped front office under David Stearns and an aggressive approach to building a contender, the Mets are under pressure to prove they’re not just spending big—but actually ready to win.
Cease, a former AL Cy Young runner-up, has been a hot name on the trade market all offseason, with several teams eyeing him as a potential difference-maker. The Mets have been linked to the right-hander, but so far, no deal has materialized. That, according to some insiders, is a mistake.
“If the Mets are serious about competing for a World Series, they must trade for Dylan Cease,” said the expert. “They need another frontline starter to pair with Kodai Senga and Luis Severino. Cease is a proven arm who could take them from a borderline playoff team to a legitimate contender.”
Pitching remains the Mets’ biggest question mark. After losing Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander last season, the team is relying on a mix of young and veteran arms. While Senga showed ace-level potential, adding a power pitcher like Cease would stabilize the rotation and give them a true one-two punch.
Meanwhile, the White Sox are in full rebuild mode, making Cease one of their most valuable trade chips. Chicago is reportedly holding out for a strong return, but the Mets have the farm system to make it happen. Prospects like Jett Williams or Blade Tidwell could be part of a potential deal.
The Mets’ front office has been cautious about blockbuster trades, but waiting too long could cost them. The Yankees, Dodgers, and Orioles have all been linked to Cease, and if the Mets don’t act soon, they could miss out.
With spring training approaching, all eyes are on the Mets. Will they pull the trigger and land the arm they desperately need? Their World Series hopes could depend on it.
