The Los Angeles Dodgers won the World Series in 2024 and are the overwhelming favourites for the 2025 MLB season. The San Diego Padres had a very quiet winter, while the Dodgers signed pitchers Blake Snell and Tanner Scott (both former Padres), Japanese ace pitcher Roki Sasaki, and South Korean infielder Hyeseong Kim, among others.
As a result, the Padres are being neglected, despite holding a 2-1 lead over the Dodgers in the NLDS last season. The Dodgers eventually rallied back and won the World Series, despite the Padres having them on the verge of elimination.
With spring training underway, Padres standout Fernando Tatis Jr. was questioned if they are being overlooked. Tatis provided a straightforward response. “I don’t,” Tatis replied when asked if they felt overlooked. “We’re just going to figure it out.”
Tatis answered the question without hesitation, stating they’d have to “figure it out.”
The Padres missed out on some prominent free agents, including Sasaki, while Scott signed with the Dodgers and Ha-Seong Kim joined the Tampa Bay Rays. Jurickson Profar also left to sign with the Atlanta Braves, so there have been a lot of exits this season. However, the Padres recently signed pitcher Nick Pivetta to a four-year, $55 million contract to provide depth to their rotation.
The Padres are constantly adding to their roster, including veteran Yuli Gurriel on Monday. Still, Tatis does not believe they are “overlooked,” especially after a 93-69 regular season finish and an NLDS run that concluded in a loss to the Dodgers.
