As first reported by Adam Schefter, the Philadelphia Eagles will release long-time veteran cornerback Darius Slay, who will now be a free agent. According to one insider, the Eagles’ decision to cut ways with the cornerback was inevitable given the team’s secondary depth. Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell entered the lineup last season as rookies and showed tremendous promise, making Slay expendable for the remainder of the season. Slay considered retiring before winning a Super Bowl with the Eagles, but he has one more season left and is willing to return to Detroit.
The former Itawamba and Mississippi State player was picked in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft and made his debut with the Lions as one of the league’s core defenders. His mobility and ability to cover man-to-man helped the Lions maintain their competitiveness in the secondary unit. However, the Lions traded Slay for a third- and fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Slay signed a three-year contract with the Eagles and won his first Super Bowl ring.
Slay has established himself as one of the league’s top cornerbacks, winning six Pro Bowls, one All-Pro, and being named co-leader in interceptions in 2017. He has been slowing down, but these five teams could give him a shot in what will be his final season in the league.
