On Tuesday of this week, the Green Bay Packers announced that they had reached an agreement with kicker Brandon McManus on a three-year contract. After a year and a half of suffering in kicker purgatory with Anders Carlson and Brayden Narveson, McManus stepped in and offered stability at a position that Green Bay lacked after parting ways with Mason Crosby following the 2022 NFL season.
Indeed, the decision to part ways with Crosby after 16 years was immensely controversial among supporters. In his final season with the Packers, he converted 86.2% of his field goals and 95.2% of his extra points. Crosby converted 81.4% of his field goal attempts and 97.3% of his extra points during his time in Green Bay.
He is also the franchise’s all-time leading scorer and served as the team’s kicker when they last won the Super Bowl.
Former Green Bay Packers kicker Mason Crosby has announced his retirement from the NFL.
After leaving the Packers, Crosby went unsigned for a period in 2023. He joined the Los Angeles Rams practice squad and was even called up for a game, but he did not participate.
Crosby was signed by the New York Giants shortly after being released, and he played three games for them. He converted five of seven field goal attempts (71.4%) and six of seven extra points (87.6%).
After becoming unsigned again in 2024, Crosby found work as a radio host on 1250AM The Fan in Milwaukee. Crosby’s NFL career was thought to be ended after taking the role. However, he said on Wednesday that he will sign a one-day deal with the Packers to retire.
Green Bay Packers fans react to Mason Crosby announcing his retirement.
Crosby was popular among Packers fans for most of his career. Sure, he had his naysayers during his struggling seasons, but Green Bay’s difficulties at kicker after his departure made him even more valuable.
Fans expressed gratitude following his retirement announcement:
Crosby, now officially retired, will be eligible for induction into the Packers Hall of Fame in a few years. He will surely be nominated on his first year of eligibility.
