The Green Bay Packers have made a major move in NFL free agency, reportedly signing cornerback Nate Hobbs to a four-year, $48 million contract. According to multiple sources, the deal includes $26 million in guaranteed money, securing the young defensive back through the 2028 season.
Hobbs, 24, spent the past three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders after being drafted in the fifth round out of Illinois in 2021. Despite his late draft status, he quickly emerged as a key contributor in the Raiders’ secondary, known for his aggressive playstyle, versatility, and strong tackling ability. His ability to play both inside as a nickel corner and outside made him a valuable asset for Las Vegas.
Green Bay’s secondary needed reinforcements after parting ways with veteran cornerback Rasul Douglas last season and dealing with injuries to key players like Jaire Alexander and Eric Stokes. By adding Hobbs, the Packers not only gain a reliable defensive presence but also a young playmaker who fits well in their defensive scheme.
The move signals Green Bay’s commitment to strengthening its defense as it builds around young quarterback Jordan Love. Hobbs will likely slot in as a starting corner alongside Alexander, forming one of the more dynamic secondaries in the NFC North.
During the 2023 season, Hobbs recorded 82 tackles, six pass deflections, and two interceptions while maintaining a physical presence in coverage. His ability to match up against slot receivers and provide run support makes him an ideal fit for Green Bay’s defensive approach.
For the Raiders, losing Hobbs leaves a hole in their secondary, but cap constraints and other roster needs likely factored into their decision to let him walk. With Antonio Pierce now at the helm, Las Vegas may look to the draft or other free-agent options to fill the void.
With NFL free agency in full swing, the Packers’ aggressive move shows their intent to remain competitive in the NFC, and Hobbs’ addition could prove crucial as they aim for another playoff run in 2024.
