The Minnesota Vikings are running out of time and options in their search for a veteran quarterback to pair with rookie J.J. McCarthy. As the quarterback carousel spins and free agents land elsewhere, Minnesota’s front office faces increasing urgency to solidify the position before training camp. Now, a new name has entered the conversation—New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones.
With Kirk Cousins gone and McCarthy still unproven at the NFL level, the Vikings have been exploring options for a veteran presence to either compete for the starting job or serve as a mentor. Initially, names like Sam Darnold, Ryan Tannehill, and Jacoby Brissett were linked to Minnesota, but most of the viable options have since signed elsewhere.
That leaves the Vikings with limited choices, and Jones—who faces an uncertain future with the Giants—could be an intriguing possibility.ones, 26, is coming off an injury-shortened 2023 season after signing a massive four-year, $160 million extension with the Giants. However, New York’s front office has not committed to him as the long-term answer, especially after a disappointing stretch of play before his injury. If the Giants decide to move on, either through the draft or by acquiring another quarterback, Jones could become available via trade or even release if the team is willing to absorb the financial hit.
For the Vikings, acquiring Jones would provide a veteran quarterback with playoff experience, mobility, and starting pedigree. However, his contract is a major hurdle, and Minnesota would likely only consider him if New York were willing to eat a large portion of his salary or if Jones were released outright.
If Jones isn’t an option, the Vikings may have to turn to lower-tier veterans or gamble on McCarthy as the Week 1 starter. While the former Michigan star has shown promise, Minnesota’s coaching staff has been clear about its desire to ease him into the role rather than throw him into the fire immediately.
With each passing day, the pressure mounts on Minnesota’s front office. Whether it’s Jones, a trade for another veteran, or a late free-agent signing, the Vikings need to act fast before they run out of options entirely.
