SHOCKING REPLACEMENT: Lions Agree to Deal With Former Steelers Quarterback To Replacement Star QB Jared Goff

Before the Detroit Lions’ playoff game versus the Washington Commanders, they made an interesting move. They changed the backup quarterback. Throughout the regular season, Hendon Hooker was the backup.

Teddy Bridgewater, who had spent the rest of the year coaching high school football, was named the playoff quarterback. That decision made it appear improbable that Hooker would start the 2025 season as the next man up at quarterback. Now they’ve officially made a move that will either move him down the depth chart or result in the Lions releasing him.

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Lions have reached an agreement with former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Kyle Allen.

Allen will play for his sixth NFL squad, the Lions. He began his career with the Carolina Panthers, who signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2018. Allen ended up starting the majority of his second season, finishing 5-7 while throwing for 3322 yards and 17 touchdowns. Since then, he has made just six starts for the Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, and Pittsburgh Steelers.

During those stops, he made only six more starts, finishing 1-5 and throwing for 1165 yards and seven touchdowns. He will now serve as a veteran backup to Jared Goff for the Lions.

Fortunately, the Lions haven’t had to worry about that much during Goff’s tenure with the organization, as he has played all 17 games in each of the last three seasons. It’s fortunate that they were able to acquire a better insurance plan.
