The Atlanta Falcons have had a quiet start to the 2025 offseason as they focus on the team’s long-term interests. Last year, the team moved its chips to the center of the table, signing Kirk Cousins, Darnell Mooney, Charlie Woerner, and dealing for pass rusher Matthew Judon.
Atlanta’s 2024 actions were those of a team looking to compete not only in the division, but also within the conference. Early returns this offseason indicate that they are taking a step back to turn the page on Michael Penix Jr. and figure out where they stand when they don’t have a quarterback imploding the season. With that in mind, the Falcons may decide to trade away expiring contracts or, more likely, try to part ways with a specific experienced quarterback.
Kirk Cousins
Atlanta’s decision to sign Kirk Cousins and draft Michael Penix Jr. in the same offseason will have long-term consequences. Cousins got off to a good start in Atlanta, but his season fell apart in the second half. The agreement was written so that this was the sole circumstance in which Cousins would not stay the starter.
Whether Cousins is released or moved, it will reduce Atlanta’s cap space. It would obviously be lot better if the team could trade the quarterback. Not only would it reduce the cap more than an outright reduction, but Atlanta would also receive at least a late-round pick in exchange.
Kyle Pitts
After Penix’s comments about Kyle Pitts, the organization should not consider parting ways with the pass catcher. As annoying as Pitts may be, the skill is far more interesting than what you will receive in return. the elusive element that unlocks Kyle’s abilities and allows him to go back in time to his first season.
Whether or whether this is the case, the Falcons have essentially a lottery ticket in the final year of Kyle’s contract. Trading the tight end now is the most savvy organization, and it’s impossible to deny how frustrating watching Pitts has been. Pitts is dealt out of sheer displeasure with his lack of regular effort and productivity.
Tyler Allgeier
Allgeier has been an excellent teammate and deserves credit for how he has conducted himself in Atlanta. Allgeier was thrown into a chaotic jumble of an offense and put up some early production from his position. The Falcons responded by upgrading the following year, drafting Bijan Robinson, rather than building around him. Allgeier deserves a shot to start, and it’s tough to imagine the back not getting one in the 2026 summer, when he’ll be free agent.
The Falcons simply can’t afford to pay Robinson and Allgeier. The Falcons certainly do not believe their club is a Super Bowl contender. To include Allgeier in a deal would bring in a player who is expected to play a role in the team’s long-term aspirations.
