In terms of the sleeper free agency options remaining on the market, the Bears have been linked to one in particular. According to Blecher Report’s Kristopher Knox, Chicago is a good fit for free agency linebacker E.J. Speed.

 

“The Chicago Bears should also be interested in Speed. Knox noted that Chicago’s defense struggled against the run in 2024, finishing the year ranked 29th in yards per carry allowed and 28th in rushing yards allowed. “New Bears linebackers coach Richard Smith held the same position in Indianapolis during both of Speed’s campaigns as a full-time starter.”

Speed is coming off a great stint with the Indianapolis Colts. Over the previous two years, he has elevated his game. In 15 games in 2024, the 29-year-old linebacker recorded 142 tackles, one interception, and five passes defended. In 2023, he recorded 102 tackles, one sack, three forced fumbles, and four passes defended. What would it take for the Bears to acquire him? Spotrac estimates that Speed will receive a contract worth approximately $5.4 million per year.
