The San Diego Padres have started the season strong, winning 5-2 over the Cleveland Guardians to extend their winning streak to seven games. The first seven games have gone just as planned for a Padres club looking to avenge their NLDS loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, and star right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. couldn’t be happier with his team’s performance.
Following the Padres’ sweep of the Guardians, which kept them unblemished in 2025, Tatis commended his team for playing terrific baseball.
“It’s just been great baseball all around,” Tatis told MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell.
It’s the first time in franchise history that the team has started the season unbeaten after seven games, yet the Dodgers, who have been a constant thorn in their side, have managed to match them stride for stride, going undefeated in their first eight games. This is only the sixth time in MLB history that two clubs have started a season without losing at least seven games, and it’s looking like another bloodbath between two NL West powerhouses.
Tatis was quite productive in the Padres’ 5-2 victory over the Guardians. He collected two hits in four at-bats and scored one of his team’s runs. This was the continuation of the Padres right fielder’s outstanding 2025 season, as he entered the night with an elite slash line of.409/.481/.591 in his ongoing quest to redeem himself after a few bad years to start the 2020s.
The Padres will seek to maintain their winning streak on Friday, when they travel to face the Chicago Cubs for the first time this season.
Padres and Dodgers dominate proceedings to begin 2025.
It’s only natural that the Dodgers are matching the Padres’ 7-0 start; after all, these are two sworn rivals who have met in the postseason before. And for San Diego, this is an encouraging indicator that they have stayed pace with their powerhouse division foe, despite the fact that Los Angeles never seems to run out of resources.
The Padres and Dodgers will meet for the first time this season in mid-June. But once they do, expect plenty of pyrotechnics, given the talent on both teams.
