With just over a month till the season begins, Indiana Fever standout Caitlin Clark’s second WNBA season is awaited with great expectation. Clark is eager to capitalize on her remarkable debut season, which saw the Fever make the playoffs and the former Iowa star named debut of the Year and WNBA All-Star.
Clark has had a busy offseason, making appearances at Chiefs games, having her jersey retired at Iowa, and doing several interviews, including one with former NFL quarterback Eli Manning and the most recent with David Letterman on Netflix’s “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman.”
Clark discussed a wide range of issues with Letterman during her appearance on the show this week. However, one remark jumped out: she mentioned something about the WNBA that she “hates.” “I don’t mind [press conferences] after games, but I hate doing them before games,” Clark noted. “The league requires it.” She then playfully said, “Maybe you should tell them not to require it anymore.”
Letterman, never one to hold back, answered with humor: “I have a special message for the WNBA, which I call the W. Stop the beforehand press conferences. “Thank you,” he responded, gazing directly into the camera at Clark’s request.
Clark has rapidly emerged as a major figure in the WNBA, with many considering her one of the league’s faces. Her influence on women’s basketball has been significant, but she continuously recognizes and honors the trailblazers who paved the way for athletes like herself. “I definitely have privilege,” Clark also stated during the interview. “I’m obviously white, but I believe I grew up as a big fan of this league. I grew up following the league, attending games, and supporting it. So I know where this league came from–a lot of Black women who grew up and helped shape it.”
Last season, Clark had an immediate impact, averaging 19.2 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game. She also led the league in assists, cementing her status as one of the WNBA’s finest playmakers. As the season approaches, all eyes will be on the Indiana Fever, who face Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky in their season opener on May 17 in Indiana.
Caitlin Clark has never been one to hold back her opinions, and the WNBA’s newest phenomenon has recently made headlines with her candid assessment of the league. In a recent post-game interview, Clark spoke candidly about the growing pains of transferring from collegiate glory to the pros.
“I hate the drama that gets stirred up for no reason,” Clark added plainly. “There is too much noise off the court. I came here to play basketball, not for a TV show.”
The rookie sensation, known for her exceptional shooting and competitive fire, has taken the league by storm. However, she made it obvious that behind-the-scenes politics and off-court diversions had been one of her most frustrating experiences thus far.
Fans and experts reacted quickly to her words, with some admiring her candor and others criticizing the rookie for speaking up so early.
Clark’s message remains clear: she’s here to play the game her way—fierce, focused, and unashamedly bold. Whether it ruffles feathers or not, Caitlin Clark has made it clear: she is not going to play by anyone else’s rules.
