On Sunday, the San Antonio Spurs won a meaningless game against the Toronto Raptors, capping out their season. After winning 22 games last season, the Spurs added 12 more, and there is a lot of hope that a fully healthy squad will be able to make the playoffs next year. Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox were both declared out before a postseason push could be made, but they both plan to return in full form next season. There are many uncertainties about how the Spurs will approach the offseason. Will they add Kevin Durant? Will the draft lottery be favorable? Who will be their coach next season?
Wembanyama and Fox appear to have a consensus on who they want the Spurs to sign in free agency, and it’s a familiar figure. “Of course,” Wembanyama answered when asked if the Spurs should re-sign Chris Paul. “Of course.” Without a doubt, Yes.” While Wembanyama wants Paul back and providing vital mentorship and point guard minutes, Fox himself is looking for an extension, and he hopes the team can make it work.
“I would hope so,” Fox said of signing an extension this summer. “It’s funny, I asked CP if this was his first year as a free agent. And yes, that was the first time he walked into free agency.
I haven’t yet, and I’m not sure if I’ll do it. But, as I said, man, I’m enthused about what we’re attempting to establish here.” Given that the Spurs traded for Fox despite the fact that he had only one full season remaining on his deal, it’s safe to assume that the sentiment is mutual. If the Spurs can get back to full strength next season, they should be a surprising contender in a congested Western Conference, and Wembanyama warned the rest of the league, “I’m hungry, and I will be ready.”
