For the Los Angeles Rams, timing is key. Despite the wealth of youth on defense for DC Chris Shula, the player behind center is driving this team’s window of opportunity. That is, veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford’s last seasons with the Rams will determine his present window of chance to win another Lombardi Trophy. And the window is closing.
The team is on the verge of reaching the Super Bowl. Oh, so near. However, the process of rebuilding the Rams roster for the upcoming NFL season reduces the likelihood of any carry-over from 2024. This is a new year, which means new opponents and players. So, Jack, it isn’t as simple as going back and doing it again.
Reforming the team creates opportunity to improve or worsen.
The Rams have recently been presented with an opportunity to improve. If the Rams recognize Stafford’s limited time as an NFL starting quarterback, they have a golden opportunity to trade for an All-Pro defensive back. I’m talking about former Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who finds himself on the trading block once more: And you can bet that once Rams fans (and past players) wake up to the latest news, they will sit up and pay attention: The Rams traded Ramsey to the Dolphins, but it was a very different club.
Ramsey is a massive cornerback, towering 6’1″ and weighing 208 pounds. Despite his stature and strength, he can defend the run and the pass effectively. At 30 years old, his clutch is slipping, but he remains the Rams’ best cornerback option right now. This team requires quality in the position. Jalen Ramsey continues to be of excellent quality.
Getting him back on the Rams’ roster won’t be simple. The Rams traded him for a third-round draft pick and tight end Hunter Long. I believe the Rams should offer a sixth-round pick and either cornerback Emmanuel Forbes or Derion Kendrick.
The Rams would need to cut existing contracts to save $10 million by 2025. That could be done, but it would take time, which the team does not have right now, especially with the draft so close.
Nonetheless, you can expect the Rams to investigate. Ramsey was vital to the Rams’ recent Super Bowl run, and his return would be extremely beneficial to the secondary. Will the Rams pursue a deal to bring back Jalen Ramsey? Stay tuned.
