In a melancholy and emotional turn of events, famous San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich — popularly known as “POPONINCH” — has officially handed over the reigns. A photo supplied by close sources shows Popovich signing a last contract from a hospital bed, marking the end of his historic tenure with the organization he helped establish.
The 75-year-old coaching legend, who has been dealing with health concerns in recent months, made the difficult but unavoidable choice to stand down from the squad he has led for nearly three decades. Although no official news conference has been arranged, a Spurs representative announced late Thursday night that Popovich will not return for the 2017 NBA season.
“This was not the ending any of us expected,” remarked a Spurs spokesperson. “But it’s one Popovich chose with the same thoughtfulness and grace he brought to every game, every practice, every player.”
Popovich’s final signature on the paper reportedly ensures the Spurs’ future leadership structure, including provisions for a smooth transition to a new head coach, who is expected to be either longtime assistant Brett Brown or rising coaching star Becky Hammon, if she returns from the WNBA.
The news comes as a shock to fans, players, and the basketball community. Popovich was more than simply a coach; he was the architect of five NBA championships, a mentor to talents such as Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, and Manu Ginóbili, and an outspoken supporter of player development and human rights off the court.
“Coach Pop changed my life,” remarked former Spur Patty Mills. “Not simply a basketball player, but also a man. He showed us how to win and, more importantly, how to care.”
