On Sunday night, the Miami Heat battled hard against the No. 1 seed Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 1. However, the Cavs pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Miami 34-21, resulting in a 121-100 home triumph. Donovan Mitchell was on fire in this game, finishing with 30 points on 11-of-19 shooting, five rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two triples in 33 minutes. This was another great start for the six-time All-Star in the NBA Playoffs, something Mitchell has come to expect. The 6-foot-3 guard has scored 30 or more points in seven consecutive Game 1s, which demonstrates this fact.
NBA Stats announced the historic news via X soon after the final buzzer, noting that the only other player in history to accomplish this feat is none other than the legendary Michael Jordan. The NBA simply had to react to Mitchell’s extraordinary accomplishment. “THIS @spidadmitchell STAT,” the NBA wrote.
Mitchell scored 38 points in Game 1 of last season’s playoffs against the New York Knicks. However, the Cavaliers lost that game 101-97. Cleveland won Game 2, but lost the following three games, bringing their postseason run to a tragic end in the first round.
Mitchell will want to make amends this year, and he is off to a good start. However, the Heat are a very dangerous opponent, and Mitchell and the Cavs will need to keep their foot on the accelerator in Game 2 on Wednesday.
