The San Antonio Spurs are anticipated to make numerous trades this summer in order to assemble the greatest possible roster around Victor Wembanyama. They’ve already partnered him with his first truly outstanding colleague, De’Aaron Fox, but they’re only getting started. The Spurs have been linked to Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Domantas Sabonis, but their positional fit, cultural fit, and timeframe fit are all questionable. One recently proposed trade prospect is even more dubious, yet the potential is appealing.
The Spurs were long linked to Trae Young as a potential lead guard, but the addition of Fox this season put an end to those rumors. Still, having three ball-handlers in the starting lineup may be exciting. “San Antonio could still get a little crazy and add Young’s immense playmaking talent to a lineup that would include Fox and Stephon Castle,” writes Andy Bailey of Bleacher Report. “The wingspans of Fox (6’6″) and Castle (6’9″) provide them viable choices to play at the 2 and 3 positions. And the trio’s abundance of playmaking and passing would make Wemby’s offensive life much easier.”
The Spurs now need at least one wing in the starting lineup, and Castle lacks the shooting ability to be a consistent threat from the corner. If the Spurs part ways with Harrison Barnes, Keldon Johnson, Blake Wesley, and draft picks in 2025 and 2025 (both via ATL) to make the deal work, Julian Champagnie and Devin Vassell will undoubtedly play important roles in the rotation. While it’s an interesting exercise to add a past trade target to the present roster, the priority for the Spurs remains wings and a backup center this offseason.
