Last season, the Washington Commanders made one surprise deal at the cornerback position to officially signal their return to success. According to a new source, Adam Peters is pondering making another important addition to his secondary.
Peters currently has few disposable assets. The Commanders have five draft picks after acquiring wide receiver Deebo Samuel Sr. and left tackle Laremy Tunsil in a trade this offseason. Most people don’t anticipate the front-office leader to make another major impact with a seasoned senior talent. That isn’t to say he has completely discounted the notion.
According to one insider, the Commanders have enquired about what it would cost to bring All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey on board.
Commanders among teams have reportedly called concerning Jalen Ramsey.
Outkick’s Armando Salguero revealed that Washington (and numerous others) had contacted the Miami Dolphins about Ramsey, who has been made available for trade. He explained that remuneration would not be an issue, even for the Commanders, but that the financial aspect of things is the most difficult impediment to overcome.
“Ramsey wants to be part of a winning team. The Dolphins have spoken with the Rams, Falcons, Lions, Commanders, Eagles, and others. The issue here isn’t draft compensation. If Ramsey is traded, he may fetch a fifth-round pick or something close to that. The issue is that Miami would have to swallow $25.2 million in dead cap if the deal occurs before June 1. So any team looking to make this trade today may be asked to provide the Dolphins with some cap relief on that figure.”
The Commanders have the right to make calls. That doesn’t guarantee they’ll take the bait, but Peters is bold enough not to rule anything out before knowing for certain.
Ramsey remains one of the league’s most effective coverage players. He’s a lockdown presence at the top of his game and a valuable contributor against the run. His addition would give the Commanders one of the league’s most productive cornerback lineups. Even yet, this seems exceedingly implausible.
If the Commanders hadn’t gotten Lattimore, Samuel, and Tunsil, the story would be different. That isn’t the case, so giving up another selection and accepting another large contract doesn’t seem practical. Not when the four-time Pro Bowler from Ohio State already has a large contract.
This demonstrates that Peters will not let up just because the Commanders do not have a large pool of draft assets. He’ll go to any length to ensure that everything is in place for Washington’s next big postseason bid. That is very evident.
