The New York Mets have the best record in baseball (18-8), despite past hitting champion Jeff McNeil (oblique) only playing one game so far. The 33-year-old went 1-for-4 in his season debut against the Washington Nationals on Friday, after being reinstated from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. In a simultaneous move, the Mets optioned fellow infielder Brett Baty to Triple-A Syracuse, despite the 6-foot-3, 210-pounder’s.993 OPS over his last eight games. He also launched a two-run homer in his most recent game, a 4-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday.
New York manager Carlos Mendoza stated on Friday that it was difficult to send Baty down, according to SNY.
“It’s a different feeling for him now going back to Triple-A, knowing [he] can play at this level as opposed to struggles,” the pitcher said. “We are sending him because there will not be enough playing time. “He’ll be back.” Baty has six hits in his previous nine games.
The 25-year-old made his Mets debut in 2022, but he played his first full season in 2023, batting.212/.275/.323 with nine home runs and 34 RBI in 108 games. He then hit.229/.306/.327 with four home runs and 16 RBI in 50 games last year.
New York lost 5-4 on Friday courtesy to a walkoff single by Nationals outfielder James Wood. Ace pitcher Kodai Senga allowed just two runs in six innings, but the bullpen couldn’t seal the deal in the ninth after the Mets scored four in the eighth.
