FLOWERY BRANCH, Georgia – Drake London will miss the Falcons’ first regular-season game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. In his Friday press conference, head coach Arthur Smith stated that he will be unavailable for the upcoming game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
He suffered a groin injury in a Week 8 loss to Tennessee, and he missed all three practices this week leading up to the Vikings game.
Smith also stated that safety DeMarcco Hellams (hamstring) and fullback Keith Smith (concussion) will miss the game on Sunday.
While cornerback/punt returner Mike Hughes (shoulder) and linebacker Tae Davis (concussion) were both listed on the injury report this week, neither received a game designation.
The absence of London is a significant blow, but the Falcons have depth at the position. More Mack Hollins and Van Jefferson could be seen in the pattern, and Cordarrelle Patterson could be another option working outside.
When Richie Grant moved into the box, Hellams frequently entered as a third safety, a role that will likely be filled by Micah Abernathy, though time will tell how the Falcons compensate for Hellams’ absence.
Keith Smith is a key special teams player with a unique offensive role, but tight end Jonnu Smith has experience playing fullback and can operate from there if necessary.
