BREAKING: Phillies are Reported in Talks To Replace Current Manager Rob Thomson With bench coach Don Mattingly and third base coach Dusty Wathan

Possible Replacements for Phillies Managers in the Event of Change
If Rob Thomson is fired by the Philadelphia Phillies, there are several possible managers to take his position. Thomson is under intense scrutiny following an 8–13 start to the season and a lackluster offseason. The Phillies have the poorest run differential in the major leagues going into play on April 20. Before May even arrives, the Phillies have already dropped more home series in 2026 than they did during the whole previous campaign. The Phillies’ start has been incredibly predictable after replaying the game and anticipating a different outcome with an older core. Thomson may have to take the fallout if changes are not implemented right away.

Bench coach Don Mattingly and third base coach Dusty Wathan are contenders for the position of interim manager, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Mattingly has managed MLB teams in the past. This includes a record of 889-950 while playing with both the Miami Marlins and the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wathan, meanwhile, doesn’t. The Phillies have more choices, both inside and foreign. When Thomson replaced Joe Girardi in the middle of the 2022 season, he had no prior MLB managerial experience. Here, some unconventional thinking might be helpful. This may even include hiring someone from outside the company.

Yankees Legend Looks Like Phillies' First Choice To Replace Rob Thomson

Possible Replacements for Phillies Managers
Paco Figueroa is the first base coach for the Phillies.
Figueroa, who has been with the Phillies since 2019, is another internal candidate already on the major league staff. Figueroa coaches the Phillies’ outfield in addition to first base. Figueroa has also served as the Phillies’ base running instructor. Figueroa’s appointment as temporary manager would bring a fresh viewpoint to the position while also allowing for some familiarity. In this case, first base coaching responsibilities would need to be assumed by someone else. If Thomson is fired as manager, some staff reorganization will be necessary regardless of who takes over. After taking over, an interim manager can also choose to make more personnel changes.

Anthony Contreras, manager of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs
Contreras might be a candidate for interim manager if the Phillies wish to emulate an NHL strategy. Since taking over as manager of the IronPigs in 2022, Contreras has guided them to at least 80 victories in each of the last three seasons. The IronPigs had the third-best full-season record in the International League last season, finishing 87-61. The IronPigs are 11–10 this season. Although it would be a risky move, having Contreras replace Thomson is something to think about. The Phillies’ coaching staff hasn’t changed much since 2022, with the exception of Mattingly entering.

This change would give the Phillies clubhouse an entirely different perspective. Due to their experience in Triple-A, some of the players are already acquainted with Contreras.

Rob Thomson Phillies Hot Seat: Manager Changes?

Someone who is not presently affiliated with the Phillies organization is referred to as a wild card.
This is a rare possibility, but as they say, “desperate times call for desperate measures.” The Phillies should call Joe Maddon to ask if he wants to take over as manager if they make a change. It is worthwhile to see if Maddon would take the offer, even though he would most likely say no. Another interesting possibility for a managerial position is Jimmy Rollins. But it’s unlikely that Rollins would quit his work in television to take on the role of interim manager. However, Rollins has no prior managerial experience.

In 2022, the Indianapolis Colts attempted a similar strategy with Jeff Saturday, but it was unsuccessful. Having said that, due to the differences in the dynamics of each sport, an MLB manager and an NFL head coach play different roles. Football is a more strategic game, while baseball is more of a fundamentals game.
