Even if they are eliminated early from the playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers are preparing for an exciting summer. They are anticipated to be proactive in their pursuit of elite talent as this summer is considered to be their most significant in years.
“This offseason, the Lakers have a megastar in Dončić and a special amount of cap space for a title contender. Bryan Toporek of Silver Screen and Roll commented, “This summer will be crucial in determining how well they can build a championship contender around Luka over the next few years.”
Building a real contender around Luka Dončić is in line with what he discussed with the front office in May of last year.
Dončić’s age of 26 gives the Lakers a far longer window of time to assemble a roster capable of winning a championship, but it doesn’t mean they can take their time. In May, Dončić informed coach JJ Redick and Lakers president Rob Pelinka that he wasn’t interested in creating a contender slowly, according to Jasmyn Wimbish of CBS Sports.
Tobias Harris is one player the Lakers would consider pairing with Dončić because of his track record in the postseason.
Since then, Harris has had two successful seasons with the Pistons. During his two regular seasons in Detroit, the seasoned forward averaged 13.5 points per game, shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from outside the arc, 5.6 rebounds, and 1.0 steal.
Harris has truly excelled in the postseason. The Pistons shooter scored 15.7 points per game on 48-44-100 shooting splits versus the Knicks last season. On the opposite end, there was strong defense as well. It has only gotten better this year. Harris was a constant in a seven-game series against the Magic, where offense was extremely difficult to come by consistently.
For him, dependability was crucial. Svyatoslav Rovenchuk of Lake Show Life stated, “That scenario now looks much more appealing for Pelinka and crew if the 15-year veteran is available for a reasonable cost on a short-term deal.”
Harris’s addition would be beneficial in a number of ways, but consistency is the most notable. He has a lot of experience in the league and knows how to make a significant contribution, particularly during the postseason.
Former first-round selection Harris is in the last year of his $52 million deal with the Detroit Pistons. A Lakers team aiming to become a title contender may benefit greatly from adding a guy like Harris.
