The Falcons don’t appear to have a clear quarterback strategy. Desmond Ridder is sitting out, and Taylor Heinicke is what he is at this point in his career.
Fans have had enough of Arthur Smith, and neither option at signal caller appears to be the stabilizing presence that Atlanta requires. The Falcons will undoubtedly be looking for a quarterback this offseason, but as Albert Breer recently pointed out in his mailbag, that may not be a bad thing.
“Now, I’m hoping Smith and Fontenot get to see the plan through, because what they’ve built is fantastic infrastructure for whoever ends up being the long-term quarterback.” Plus, you could put that person in an offense with a high-paid line (anchored by Jake Matthews, Chris Lindstrom, and Kale McGary), Bijan Robinson to relieve pressure and be an outlet in the run game, Drake London and Kyle Pitts to throw to, and a defense with a really solid core.”
At this point, the Falcons haven’t gone all in on anyone other than Deshaun Watson. Atlanta will not be able to sign either Drake Maye or Caleb Williams, but they will have all of their future draft picks and plenty of cap space to move up in the draft or trade for an established player.
It could be a lot worse. At the very least, Arthur Smith and Terry Fontenot have laid the groundwork for the next regime to find a quarterback solution.
