Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the Las Vegas Raiders is likely coming to an end after the rookie Aidan O’Connell was benched in favor of him.
Garoppolo, who inked a three-year, $72.75 million contract this offseason, threw nine interceptions, seven touchdowns, and a below-average 35 yards per completion rating in six starts. The 32-year-old is obviously not the solution.
According to Gutierrez, interim head coach Antonio Pierce recently stated that Jimmy G. is likely not done for the season. It would make sense to go back to Garoppolo rather than Brian Hoyer, who has lost 12 straight games as a starter, in case O’Connell, a fourth-round pick out of Purdue, struggles. The prognosis for Garoppolo’s future in Vegas remains unchanged.
This offseason, the Raiders may attempt to trade Garoppolo, but it’s unlikely that he’ll draw many suitors. Releasing him also comes with a price. As per Over the Cap, if he is cut with a pre-June 1 designation, dead money will cost $28.3 million, whereas a post-June 1 designation will cost $15.5 million.
The 2024 draft looks like a great time to potentially choose a long-term solution at the most important position, despite the significant financial loss. Jordan Reid, an ESPN draft analyst, graded four quarterbacks in the first round: J.J. McCarthy of Michigan, Drake Maye of North Carolina, and Caleb Williams of Southern Cal.
The Raiders (4-5) are predicted by ESPN’s football power index to have the sixth overall pick, putting them in a position to choose a young, gifted quarterback that they can develop around.
