According to CLNS Media, the Celtics signed 6-8 forward Taylor Funk to an Exhibit 10 contract this week. Funk is 26 this season, following a lengthy college career at St. Joseph’s and Utah State. The deal puts the shooter on track to join the Maine Celtics as an affiliate player following training camp, and it marks Boston’s 18th offseason signing out of a possible 21.
Funk appeared in four Summer League games for the Heat, shooting 5-for-19 (26.3% FG) from the field (4-for-17 3PT, 23.5%), drawing no free throws. At Utah State, he shot 45.1%, 37% from three, and concluded his college career with a 42.7% shooting percentage (35.7% 3PT on 1,004 attempts). Before committing, he attended Manheim Central High School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
Due to a redshirt season in 2020 due to a hand injury, Alabama, Florida, Miami, Arkansas, LSU, and others expressed interest in him as a sixth-year senior, but he picked Utah State owing to its similarities to Lancaster and to focus on playing the four. That is the position he will need to play in order to make it to the NBA, which he will most likely achieve through the G-League.
After adding DJ Steward earlier this summer, Boston is still uncertain on its third two-way spot, but it doesn’t give many pro minutes to a player in that position nonetheless. That second two-way spot was created by the new collective bargaining agreement, while Exhibit 10 deals still normally offer a bonus to waived players to become affiliate players in the G-League for a set amount.
