Could the Yankees land one of baseball’s best players this offseason?
They only won 82 games last season, but they’re not far from contending for a postseason spot. Despite having one of the worst offenses in baseball, New York finished above.500. The Yankees’ starting rotation has some concerns, but the offense was mediocre, and the team still managed to win 82 games.
If the Yankees can make significant improvements this offseason, particularly in the outfield, it could be a game changer. The New York Mets have been linked to San Diego Padres superstar Juan Soto as a potential trade candidate, but it’s unclear how realistic such a deal is. At this point, it’s unclear whether the Padres will move Soto, but the Yankees have been in contact with them about a deal, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch.
“With rumors that the Padres may trade Juan Soto, the Yankees have made contact, assessing their chances of acquiring the enticing 25-year-old.” Soto’s arrival would instantly dispel any lingering angst in the Bronx, coming off a season in which he hit.275/.410/.519 with 35 home runs and 109 RBIs.
“But can the Yankees persuade Soto to stay? After turning down a 15-year, $440 million extension from the Nationals in July 2022, Soto will be a free agent after 2024, and with agent Scott Boras poised to bring the superstar to the open market, Soto’s asking price figures to be astronomical.”
Soto would be an excellent addition to the Yankees. He is one of baseball’s best players despite being only 25 years old. The Padres’ asking price will almost certainly be high, and the Yankees will have to worry about a contract extension, but he is worth it. He has the potential to help the Yankees regain contention right away. If a move is feasible, they should do everything possible to make it happen.
