According to the Heat, there is a 10-inch drop-off from the court to the floor near the Cavs’ bench, and Smith landed on the edge of that drop, causing a season-ending knee injury.

The Heat did not file a formal complaint, but they did call the league office to express their displeasure with the drop. Other teams and players who have traveled to play the Cavs have also noticed.

“It’s something that definitely needs to be looked at,” Lakers coach and former NBA player Darvin Ham said before Saturday’s game against Cleveland. “Any time … you have a situation where someone’s getting hurt and the potential to get hurt, and in this particular case it’s the floor, I think they need to take a look at it and see if there are ways things could be better.”

Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse was built in 1994 and renovated in April 2019.

“Our guys are comfortable playing here,” Cavs coach said.According to B. Bickerstaff. “We haven’t had any incidents because of the way our floor is constructed.” I can see how opponents who aren’t used to it might perceive it as a distraction, but we’ve had no issues with it.”
