Many people thought the Detroit Pistons were on the rise heading into the 2023-24 season. After all, there was plenty of optimism surrounding the development of Cade Cunningham, who was coming off a season-ending shin injury, and they also added one of the draft class’s most talented rookies in Ausar Thompson. Monty Williams, the head coach who oversaw the Phoenix Suns’ turnaround, was also hired by the Pistons to try to instill a winning culture in a franchise that has grown accustomed to losing over the last 15 years or so.
However, there appears to be no light at the end of the tunnel that is the Pistons’ rebuild. The Pistons simply folded on Wednesday night during a difficult matchup against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Lakers exploded out of the gate, taking a 14-point lead after the first quarter en route to a 133-106 thrashing of the ailing Pistons, handing them their 14th straight defeat.
While the Pistons are still missing key players like Bojan Bogdanovic and Monte Morris, fans are clearly at their breaking point as they watch their team fall to the bottom of the NBA standings yet again. They are directing their rage at head coach Monty Williams, who has clearly fallen far short of expectations in his first 17 games in Detroit.
“Monty Williams is breaking the law in broad daylight. He signed that contract despite knowing he didn’t want to coach this season. He robbed us mercilessly. It’s completely insane. “Everything is just off,” wrote one fan. Another wrote, “Monty Williams duped us.”
Others aren’t even willing to give Monty Williams more time, claiming that a change is necessary given the Pistons’ disappointing start to the season.
“Fire Monty Williams! @DetroitPistons goin say it til we win a game this is awful,” a member of the crowd tweeted.
As Bobby Marks of ESPN pointed out, the main concern surrounding the Pistons right now isn’t necessarily all of their losses, but rather “bad habits developing, leading to stunted growth of their young players.”
Will the Detroit Pistons make a change? Given the financials involved in Monty Williams’ contract, perhaps not. But something has to change on the court for them to stop the bleeding.
