TORONTO – John Klingberg’s season with the Maple Leafs is over.
After Wednesday’s practice, Toronto general manager Brad Treliving told reporters that the 31-year-old will have hip surgery in the coming weeks, which will keep him out for up to six months.
Klingberg signed a free-agent contract with the Leafs for $4.15 million, with the goal of adding to the team’s offense.
However, he struggled early on and never looked at ease in Toronto, recording five assists in 14 games.
Klingberg was placed on long-term injured reserve last month after not playing since November 11.
Treliving can now use Klingberg’s $4.15 million salary cap hit to bolster his roster, with assistance for a battered blue line that is also missing Timothy Liljegren (high ankle sprain) and Mark Giordano (broken finger) a top priority.
