According to Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston, Houston Texans quarterback and Offensive Rookie of the Year frontrunner C.J. Stroud is still in the concussion protocol and has not been cleared to practice. Stroud suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter against the Jets on Sunday after being pushed to the ground by defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
“Stroud is making steady progress and feeling a lot better, per sources, but he hasn’t reached a point in his recovery where he is allowed to practice,” Wilson wrote in an email.
In addition, he stated that “Davis Mills has been preparing to start all week” in the Texans’ divisional game against the Tennessee Titans. Last season, Mills started 15 games for Houston, throwing for 3,118 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions. When he took over for Stroud on Sunday, he was 1-of-5 for four yards.
“Davis has done a good job of everything that we’ve asked of him [this season],” Houston coach DeMeco Ryans said on Wednesday. “He’s done an excellent job of simply leading in his own right.” Just seeing him on our scout team and how he assists us with defensive looks. He’s done an excellent job with what he’s been given.”

When compared to Stroud, Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said he’ll change the way he calls plays with Mills under center.
“You always want to call a game to your player’s strengths, and it starts with the quarterback,” Slowik told reporters on Thursday. “I believe we can all agree that C.J. throws the ball better than most humans we’ve ever seen.” He threads needles all the time; it’s a special skill he possesses. The following players did not practice Thursday: wide receiver Nico Collins (calf), tackle George Fant (hip), linebacker Blake Cashman (hamstring), defensive end Will Anderson Jr. (ankle), and cornerback Tavierre Thomas (hamstring). According to Wilson, left tackle Laremy Tunsil returned to practice after missing the previous day.
