On October 12, the Cowboys signed Evans to the practice squad. The defender rose to prominence as a result of Leighton Vander Esch’s season-ending injury. Evans had nine tackles in nine games (including one start) before being released.
Evans was taken by the Titans with the 22nd overall choice in the 2018 NFL Draft after a great collegiate career at Alabama. Evans started his first four seasons as a linebacker for Tennessee.
The defender later signed with the Falcons in 2022. While starting all 17 games for Atlanta, Evans recorded a career-high 159 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, and 4 pass deflections.
Cowboys Update: Rashaan Evans, an ex-Dallas Cowboys linebacker, was arrested for marijuana possession.
Evans’ release comes just one day after the defense was arrested in Frisco for marijuana possession, according to The Dallas Morning News. Given the team’s already depleted linebacker corps, the release is quite surprising.
“Former Cowboys linebacker Rashaan Evans was arrested in Frisco on Tuesday for possession of marijuana (2-4 oz.), a Frisco Police spokesperson confirmed to The Dallas Morning News,” The Dallas Morning News reported on December 27, 2023.
Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy called Evans’ departure a “tough” choice. Given that Dallas has already promoted Waletzko, the organization is unlikely to bring in a seasoned linebacker to replace Evans. According to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News, Evans’ arrest played no role in the team’s decision to release the veteran.
“A Cowboys official downplayed the timing of LB Rashaan Evans’ arrest Tuesday for marijuana possession and its relationship to Evans being waived,” Gehlken wrote on X on December 27. “There are several factors at play. The team required a roster place for OT Matt Waletzko. If he clears waivers, Evans will be considered for the practice squad.”
