Everton are optimistic about Dwight McNeil’s injury after he was stretchered off in the FA Cup match against Crystal Palace.
After a goalless draw at Selhurst Park, the third-round match will now be replayed. Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin was controversially sent off in the 79th minute following a VAR review for a foul on Palace defender Nathaniel Clyne.
To make matters worse for the Blues, McNeil had an ankle injury that necessitated extensive care. After the game, Dyche commented on McNeil’s fitness, saying, “It’s early, but Dwight is in the dressing room and calm, which is a good sign.” It’s a swollen ankle, hopefully, but it’s too early to tell.”
Calvert-Lewin was issued his marching orders, leaving Everton perplexed. Although referee Chris Kavanagh did not call a foul for the striker’s challenge on Clyne, VAR requested that the incident be reviewed by the on-field referee – and Kavanagh was given a red card.
The Toffees have the option of appealing Calvert-Lewin’s expulsion, however Dyche acknowledges he would ‘double-check’ the process. “I haven’t asked Dom [how he’s feeling],” the Blues manager said to ITV Sport. Slow-motion captures a different image. If you’re going to slow things down, you should also slow down what could have been a penalty on Beto. He has his arms around him, covering his body; he falls, and it is not offered. If you have to slow-motion everything, you have to slow-motion everything.
“At the end of the day, there is minor contact.” He doesn’t give anything, and if you slow it down, everything appears worse, as we all know. We’ll double-check the procedure because I’m not sure what it is.”
