According to The Athletic’s Max Olson, former Maryland quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa explored his options for the future on Friday by logging onto the transfer portal. Following his original transfer from Alabama, Tagovailoa spent four seasons as a player at Maryland. He went on to play in 41 games for the Terrapins, scoring 13 touchdowns on the ground and 76 touchdowns throwing.
In the 2023 season, he eclipsed the record held by the legendary Curtis Painter of Purdue, with 11,256 passing yards with Maryland, making him the most in Big Ten history. Tagovailoa would require the NCAA to grant him a waiver in order to play a sixth season in 2024, as he has already used up his five years of eligibility between Maryland and Alabama. It’s uncertain if Tagovailoa will be able to use the sixth year exception if the NCAA grants it. When Tagovailoa decided not to play in the bowl game last month, Maryland coach Mike Locksley hinted to the media that he was weighing all of his alternatives.
“When he came to sit down and then he made the decision that he didn’t want to play in the bowl game in an effort to pursue future opportunities, whether it be the NFL, whether it be transferring, if in fact there were more time available, it was a pretty easy conversation because the mutual respect was there,” Locksley recalled. In order to play closer to his brother Tua, Tagovailoa would like to go to Miami, according to Jeff Ermann of Inside MD Sports at the time.
