The Browns became the first team since 2015 to win games with four different starting quarterbacks, so the firings, which took place on Tuesday, are a little surprising. Despite missing Deshaun Watson, Pro Bowl running back Nick Chubb, and their top three offensive tackles to season-ending injuries, they finished 16th in the NFL in yards per game (335.9) and 10th in points per game (23.3). Stefanski brought McCartney, Mitchell, and Van Pelt with him when he joined the team in 2020.

Cleveland Browns' David Njoku Burned in Household Accident

Tight end David Njoku, a seventh-year player, was second on the Browns with 882 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season, both career highs, under McCartney’s direction. McCartney was a member of the team in 2014 as well as having served as an offensive assistant in 2020–21. Since Stefanski took over as head coach, Mitchell has been the running backs coach. Even though Chubb suffered a season-ending injury in Week 2, the Browns still concluded the season with 118.6 yards per game, enough for 12th place in the league. In spite of the fact that his 4.0 yards per carry placed him 29th in the league among rushers with at least 100 runs, Jerome Ford was able to assume the starting role and lead the Browns with 813 rushing yards. Thanks to the outstanding play of quarterback Joe Flacco, who was 38 at the time, the Browns closed the regular season with four wins in their final four important games. However, their winning streak was abruptly ended on Saturday in the Wild Card Round when they were defeated 45-14 by the Texans.

In the second half of the game, Flacco threw back-to-back pick sixes, effectively ending any chance the Browns had of rallying from a 10-point hole at the half.
