ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Caleb Downs, an All-American safety for Alabama and a freshman, is putting his name into the transfer portal. In 2023, Alabama’s Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award winner, Downs, led the team with 107 total tackles while starting all 14 games. In addition, he recorded four passes defended and two interceptions. Scouts already consider Downs to be among the best talents available in the 2026 NFL Draft.
Being among the best players in the transfer portal will attract attention right away from some of the best teams in the country, notably rival Georgia, where Kirby Smart’s staff recently hired former Alabama defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson. When you combine coach Nick Saban’s retirement with Robinson’s relocation to Georgia, it’s no secret that Downs is considering his choices for the upcoming season and beyond. Although Downs’s retention in a Crimson Tide uniform was clearly a top objective for new coach Kalen DeBoer, the young safety would instead look into other opportunities.
