The Raiders’ short list of potential general managers is getting longer. According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, former Chargers general manager Tom Telesco is in Las Vegas today for a follow-up interview regarding the role. Colts executive Ed Dodds has also met twice with the Raiders, as his colleague Tashan Reed points out.
Midway through the 2023 season, Telesco’s lengthy tenure with the Chargers came to an end when he and head coach Brandon Staley were let go. Because of this, the team is searching for a new general manager for the first time since 2013. The division foe Raiders are interested in Telesco while that hunt is going on. Dodds has drawn more attention and is thought to be the strongest candidate to succeed interim general manager Champ Kelly in the full-time position.
Based on the news released today, Telesco’s interview with the Raiders earlier this month seemed to go OK. Recently, the Raiders resolved their coaching dilemma by releasing head coach Antonio Pierce from the interim tag. Although many people applauded the decision, it depletes the team’s bench experience. Hiring Telesco would eliminate the danger associated with pairing Pierce with an inexperienced general manager.
During his stay there, the latter assisted in leading the Chargers to a winning record six times and was in charge of several high-profile player signings. Although the Raiders now have a far more uncertain scenario at quarterback, one of his most significant decisions was to approve Justin Herbert’s huge offseason agreement. Raiders are keeping an eye on former Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler says that Caldwell will interview with the team for a role on the defensive staff. Caldwell might be considered to take over as defensive coordinator with Vegas if Patrick Graham, who is currently in that capacity, decides to leave for a head coaching position, according to Fowler.
