Asa Turner, a former defensive back for Washington, is moving to Florida. Turner declared his commitment to the Gators on Thursday after making an official trip to Florida over the weekend.
Turner remarked, “I’m really excited about this opportunity.” “I had an excellent visit, and everything seemed to be in its proper place. I understand that you cannot make an emotional choice because I have gone through this process previously.
“When I got home, I still felt really good about Florida and wanted to wait a few days to see how I felt once the emotional high subsided. I feel really comfortable there, and I’m sure that knowing some of the staff coaches helped a lot.
Turner is primarily being recruited by Will Harris, the new DB coach, who also assisted in getting him to Washington as a member of the class of 2019.
Turner remarked, “Being there is huge for me.” He recruited and coached me, so I know exactly what I’m getting into. I’ve known him for years.
He contacted me as soon as I logged into the portal and is a terrific instructor in addition to being a lovely man. He told me I could contribute right now since they need some experienced leadership back there, even though they have several young, bright stars. After our conversation on Thursday, I boarded a trip to Florida the following day to visit.
Turner continued by saying he liked his role and fit in the defence and that he also spent time with the other members of the Florida staff.
Turner remarked, “I spent a lot of time with Austin Armstrong, the DC.” “We reviewed my film and the Florida defense’s film, and he demonstrated to me how well I would fit in.
“They have a tremendously good staff because Ron Roberts, a co-DC, is joining them from Auburn. Coach Napier was laid-back when I spoke with him briefly as well. He’s a really laid-back and kind man. We didn’t spend much time because it was Junior Day, but we had a pleasant conversation, and he’s a wonderful guy.
Turner acknowledged that deciding to leave Washington was undoubtedly difficult for him.
At Washington, Turner remarked, “I loved it.” “When I first entered the portal, I was about 75% certain that I would return to Washington. The DC and DB coaches were among the many employees who weren’t yet on board.
“I couldn’t wait forever because school started already, and after seeing Florida, I felt confident in my choice because I loved the fit there. I’m working hard to get up there—ideally by the end of the week. I want to get there, start training, and get going because classes have started.
Turner said he feels well and hopes to be fully recovered by spring ball, despite having played with two broken hands the previous season. Over the previous three seasons, he started 26 games for the Huskies, contributing not only experience but also intelligence and toughness.
“Like I said, I’m excited and feel this is a great opportunity,” Turner stated. “The coaches brought up the fact that I had performed on a large platform in several important games. I can be both an impact player and a mentor to the younger defensive backs.”
