Before they can really get to work, first-year head coaches frequently have to tackle the difficult process of filling out the entire coaching staff. This usually entails starting over with many coaches and getting rid of the staff they were merely a part of. Coaches may rely on contacts from prior placements, industry buddies, and customary interview protocols. They might also decide to keep some of the coaches from the previous team. DeMeco Ryans, the head coach of the Houston Texans, chose to keep defensive line coach Jacques Cesaire in such a manner.
During the 2022 season, Cesaire was employed by Love Smith, the current head coach. Since a large portion of Houston’s squad consisted of young defensive players who were still developing, Ryan decided to stick with continuity. But last week, it became evident that Cesaire would not be joining the crew again in 2024. The Texans decided to let him go free after his contract expired. Cesaire was hired by the Cleveland Browns on Saturday as their defensive line coach in a lateral move to take Ben Bloom’s spot. Cesaire was a defensive tackle for the San Diego Chargers for almost ten years before joining the Houston coaching staff. From 2015 until 2019, he would serve as the defensive line coach there. The following two seasons, Cesaire worked as Eric Washington’s assistant defensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills. He made some good money during his two years in Houston. With 39 sacks in 2022, the Texans were 18th in the league; in 2023, they increased that number. They were 13th in the league with 46 sacks. Cesaire not only managed the growth of edge rusher Jonathan Greenard but also brought in a standout player in Will Anderson Jr.
